Dear North Penn,

Many of us sat yesterday afternoon with our eyes and ears firmly fixed on the television as we awaited a verdict that impacted this nation and every community within it, including North Penn.

The guilty verdict in the murder of George Floyd is just one step forward in helping to heal this nation, unite, and perhaps most importantly, bring equity to Black Americans and, in fact, all people who face discrimination, violence, and racism. But we know there is an incredible amount of work yet to be done, both locally and nationally.

NPSD is committed to its mission to develop a respect for diversity and appreciation of human differences. To that end, over the last several years we have strengthened our work to develop a culturally proficient staff and the establishment of structures that promote equitable opportunities and anti-racism. Through partnerships with families and students, our school district is resolute in creating an environment of respect where all members of the school community are empowered to learn, grow, and appreciate one another.

As a school community, we need to be open in our dialogue about race relations. Our students have access to information at their fingertips through technology and social media, and process what they see, read and hear in many different ways. Our school staff, and in particular our school counselors, are available to help our students as they navigate their emotions and reactions. For our families, you can find multiple resources for these important conversations on the school district website.

Together we can make this world a better place for everyone, no matter where they come from, what they look like, or what they believe. I am hopeful that as a community we will move forward with respect and compassion for all.
